Aniston Ditches Lover Over Twitter Fiasco

We're not typically in the business of reporting on celebrity gossip nonsense, but when Twitter plays a staring role, we'd be a little remiss to not share the news with you. That's why we find it incredibly interesting that the Telegraph is claiming that Jennifer Aniston kicked John Mayer to the curb in part for his twittering ways.

The media outlet asserts that "people claiming to be friends of the actress have told Star magazine that she finished the affair after discovering Mayer, 31, spent hours on the networking website, despite telling her he was too busy to get in touch with her."

Realistically, the break up had less to do with Twitter and more to do with the reported lack of attention. But if the rumors are true, it might be in someone's best interest to explain to Jen that tweeting can be a mindless and effortless endeavor (ie. he wasn't choosing Twitter over her). Regardless, if your boyfriend wasn't calling you, how would you like to see a constant stream of tweets like the ones alleged? Apparently, even Mayer has taken a liking to the no-brainer behaviour of retweeting (RT), much like the rest of us.

So is Mayer obsessed with Twitter? From the looks of it, Mayer didn't start to embrace Twitter until February of this year, with his average tweets per day coming in at 7.4. Though his activity has certainly trended exponentially up, 7.4 tweets a day does not a Twitter addict make (yet). TweetStats has a little more data on John Mayer's twittering behavior.

With today's news we also have to wonder if Twitter is the hot new celebrity addiction, and whether or not we'll start to see Twitter rehab for the rich and famous. Sure that may be a big stretch, but if the glitterati start Twittering as frequently as we do, we're bound to see more and more gossip-worthy news come straight from the microblog du joir. At the very least, we could see publicist-led Twitter interventions since celebs are bound to reveal newsworthy tidbits - and risk a PR nightmare - if they tweet too much.
