Apple’s iPhone’s Second Coming

RSS Icon

It seems that the water-walking gods of Cupertino have shone upon us, and blessed us mere mortals with a glimpse of fruits soon to bear from the great Apple tree of awesomeness. But before we suckle on the teat of Steve Jobs gospel let me pay reference to appadvice.com who are currently experiencing server outages due to the influx of traffic to their site this morning.

At this point given a view of new technology I would compare said tech with a competitor. Here I feel this is a waste of time. Over the last year or so watching other companies like Samsung, HTC, and LG perpetually and fruitlessly try to churn out iPhone clones is almost painful to watch. First comes a bit of self-induced hype, then some useless gimmickry features and then despite practically ripping off the iPhone interface downright failure to deliver on the end-user-experience.This, despite specs, features (or sometimes lack of) is what the iPhone is all about.

So what is it then?

Well it’s twice as powerful and has twice the RAM as existing phones, with new memory sizes of 32 and 16GB. Its rubber backed, sleeker and –get this – the apple logo on the back lights up. I can almost hear the gasps and whoops of glee from fanboys as they picture themselves standing in Starbucks gratuitously mesmerising onlookers with their new wifi-GPS-compass-enabled iPhone.

More seriously though, the specifications are fairly impressive given that sources say the price isn’t going to budge. Which is downright amazing.

It’s also sporting a fancy new OLED screen which, although isn’t ground breaking news is nice to know. What isn’t made clear is if the original screen size or 640x960 resolution is changed. I’m guessing not, as re-scaling or windowing existing applications on the fly would be un-aesthetic and not really Apple’s way.

Other additions include a built in compass, 3.2 megapixel camera and video capture and editing facilities.
