The Tether is an application that allows users to access their smart phones Internet connection to use in conjunction with a Laptop or Notebook. The application, previously known as the ‘Tetherberry’ will effectively displace costly USB ‘Dongle’ style devices that perform the same function.

The application has changed its name as it is set to be available on other smart phones apart from the Blackberry. Early rumours suggest that Tether will be available also on Android compatible devices and the Apple iPhone.  The application is currently available in the Blackberry App World alongside an Android beta version.

In the USA, telecoms giant AT&T have not allowed tethering via the iPhone.  Although if you jailbreak the phone, tethering can be enabled, the regular software on the iPhone simply wont allow it. When Apple announced the release of iPhone OS 3.0, it promised that tethering would be enabled in the near future. In the UK, network providers such as O2 have enabled tethering, but it’s a pain to set up.
